Join us for a presentation by Erlyn Mendez,  Coordinator of College Now  at Hunter College and  Molly Hennighausen, Executive Director of the  New York State Summer School of the Arts program (NYSSSA).

  

College Now:  College Now is a collaboration between the City University of New York (CUNY) and the New York City Department of Education that prepares public high school students for successful academic performance in college.  http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/college-now

 

NYS Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA):  NYSSSA is a summer arts residential intensive program that includes individual and group instruction in seven schools: ballet, choral studies, modern dance, visual arts, media arts, orchestral studies, and theatre.  http://www.oce.nysed.gov/nysssa

STUDIO OBSERVATIONS & PERFORMANCES!

Dance Studio families are looking forward to their studio "observations" when they  are able to come and observe their students during their dance classes! The Drama Studio kicks off its Junior Scenes this week - the first time that Drama families see their students perform - both Ms. Cervellino and Ms. Buffamanti's classes will be taking the floor in the Black Box.

WINTER GOSPEL TICKETS ON SALE

Winter Gospel tickets are now available for purchase online for the Wednesday, December 18th Performance at 7:00 PM in the Little Flower Theater!  Enjoy an evening of music to inspire us for the holiday season! Tickets will also be available for purchase at the school school, by next Wednesday, December 11th.  Tickets are $20/adult and $15/student.   Online sales will close on December 17th at 9:00 AM. After that, tickets will be available at the door, cash only please.

Auction Committee Volunteers Needed!

Our Spring Auction is one of the school's biggest fund-raisers.  We need volunteers to lead the drive to solicit items/experiences for donations, organize the items for sale and spearhead the publicity and outreach to all families for contacts they may have for donations such as restaurants, Broadway shows, local retail, vacations homes/trips, spas, signed memorabilia, tutoring services and your other creative ideas!!! NAVIANCE ACCESS! SECURITY UPDATE!

Naviance is the online system we use to provide students with college planning and career assessment tools. LaGuardia Administration has advised of a new Naviance Security Feature - If a student/parent has a valid email address in Naviance, they will be able to reset their own password. Students/ parents will receive an email with their temporary password to use to log in, and then will be required to reset their password to the new requirements. If a student/parent does not currently have a valid email address in Naviance, as of December 16th they will be able to auto-generate a temporary password.

If you have a Senior Student, remind them to get the Parent Rave Sheet  from their guidance counselor and also ask a couple of teachers to write a Teacher Rave  for them.

If your student is not taking a make-up exam during Regents Week (January 21-24th) and Monday, January 27th, Chancellors Day can be a great time to see colleges and BFA programs when they are in session. There is nothing better than seeing a college WITH STUDENTS and you can only tour BFA programs during the week, so January Regents Week is the perfect time to go and airfares are cheap! The next window of opportunity is typically in February break and then April break, both very popular times!

Georgetown University - Center on Education & the Workforce

Using data from the expanded College Scorecard, this report ranks 4,500 colleges and universities by return on investment.  A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges  finds that bachelor's degrees from private colleges, on average, have higher ROI than degrees from public colleges 40 years after enrollment. Community colleges and many certificate programs have the highest returns in the short term, 10 years after enrollment, though returns from bachelor's degrees eventually overtake those of most two-year credentials. LIFEGUARDS WANTED - SUMMER 2020!

Tryouts: December 7, 2019 thru mid-January 2020

Try out now to become an NYC lifeguard for Summer 2020!   NYC Parks is starting the search for new candidates with strong swimming skills to participate in our free lifeguard training program for the upcoming summer season.   Testing locations can be found throughout the five boroughs.  Find a qualifying test location near you.  Please check back periodically as additional dates may be added.

For those who qualify, training begins in January. First-year lifeguards earn a minimum of $15.00 an hour.  Most lifeguards work 48 hours each week, for a weekly salary of up to $800.  New York City's 8 beaches are open from Memorial Day weekend through the week after Labor Day, and the 53 outdoor pools are open from late June through the week after Labor Day.  There is no need for an appointment; just be sure to bring a bathing suit, towel and lock for a locker.  If you have any questions, please visit our   Lifeguard Information page , or email us at  [email protected] .

The 4th Kids Film It Festival will be held February 21, 2020 at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. T he festival affords kids and young people with the opportunity to showcase their work, and all proceeds go to the Michael J. Apply for Manhattan Community Board Student Representative! One of the projects the Manhattan Borough President's Office is currently working on is expanding youth involvement in local politics, or more specifically, the borough of Manhattan's community boards. Anyone over the age of 16 is able to apply and join, however, most community boards have not a single youth representative. Have you considered becoming a youth representative? The Spring Future Artists Programs are free of charge and for groups traditionally underrepresented in the media industry. They are designed for students who may not have access to other programs and who would qualify for financial aid at NYU. High school students applying to the Spring Future Artists Programs must submit an NYU Financial Information Form (please review the  Spring Future Artists Admissions Requirements  for details). These programs require a 14-week commitment on Saturdays from early February through mid-May and are taught by faculty from the undergraduate departments. This is a commuter program, not a residency program. To be eligible for this program, you must be a junior in high school or younger and attend a high school in one of the five boroughs of New York City, or (but not limited to) Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey, parts of Philadelphia and Connecticut.  For more information and to apply

Since 2001, ICP's Teen Academy program has supported thousands of New York City high school students in using cameras as tools to tell their own stories, build community, and contribute to social change. They are accepting applications for their teen program (HS kids) and have scholarships available.  Here's the link to the application

Scene 1 is The New Group's innovative theater education program serving NYC public high school students. Prioritizing ensemble building and character development, students learn advanced acting, playwriting, and movement skills with seasoned professionals, including Master Classes with New Group artists. The goals of Scene 1 are to develop students' voices as emerging artists through the creation of original work that connects to their lives, to provide students with courses in acting and writing, and to create an ensemble of young artists who understand what it means to be part of a community. Each award provides full tuition, as well as room and board, for the term of the scholarship.
